Sound Series: Soy Sos with PVKVSV: Dub Corridor

The Warhol Museum’s Sound Series is partnering with PearlArts on a monthly summer series focused on the reggae offshoots/evolutions of dub, roots, dancehall, sound system culture and beyond. Each collaboration will be a different take on these elements, drawing from prepared materials and improvisations.

Soy Sos (aka Herman Pearl) and and collaborator PVKVSV (aka Hussein Pwono) will join for a special site specific performance, Dub Corridor, developed with their renovated side alley, Silver Street, in mind. The duo will experiment with the unique acoustics of this intimate urban alley turned patio/beer garden, with an exploratory, electronic, beat-driven, and dub-inspired set for a relaxed, outdoor summer evening. This performance is an extension of PearlArts’ SYNCHRONIZED: with Soy Sos series.

PVKVSV (aka Hussein Pwono) is a Congolese-American artist, beatmaker, DJ and emerging producer from Pittsburgh, PA. He expands on jazz and hip hop roots & incorporates electronic elements and samples from music that moves- bossa nova, flamenco, and Italian film scores are just a few sources of inspiration, but influence can be found anywhere, and the artist leaves no stone unturned.

Herman Pearl/Soy Sos is a sound designer, audio engineer, and producer. He sees sound as an actual physical force, literally moving the air around and through us. This was impressed upon him in his early encounters with Jamaican sound system, dub and bass culture in the late 80s. It informs everything he does from the composition, production, and mixing of the music to the design and configuration of the playback systems for performances.

  • Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

  • This performance is primarily standing room only. Limited seating is available upon advance request. We are committed to offering inclusive, engaging experiences for people of all abilities. To request accommodations to enhance your visit, please contact access@warhol.org or call 412.237.8354.

Sound Series: Soy Sos with Gladstone Deluxe: Dub Corridor

The Warhol Museum’s Sound Series is partnering with PearlArts on a monthly summer series focused on the reggae offshoots/evolutions of dub, roots, dancehall, sound system culture and beyond. Each collaboration will be a different take on these elements, drawing from prepared materials and improvisations.

Soy Sos (aka Herman Pearl) and collaborator Gladstone Deluxe will come together for a special site specific performance, Dub Corridor, developed with their renovated side alley, Silver Street, in mind.

Gladstone Butler is a New York based artist working with percussion and electronics. His work takes the form of recorded media, installations and performance. While percussion is often only tied to the act of striking an object, Gladstone sees percussion as an expressive manifestation of time architectures that bind humans, framed by the larger rhythmical walls of sun-rise and set. In Gladstone’s work, musical rhythm becomes a unique tool for celebrating nonlinearity, asymmetry and difference in society.

Herman Pearl/Soy Sos is a sound designer, audio engineer, and producer. He sees sound as an actual physical force, literally moving the air around and through us. This was impressed upon him in his early encounters with Jamaican sound system, dub and bass culture in the late 80s. Sound Series: Soy Sos with Bri Dominque and Ras Maisha: Dub Corridor

Soy Sos (aka Herman Pearl) and collaborators Bri Dominique and Ras Maisha will join for a special site specific performance, Dub Corridor, developed with their renovated side alley, Silver Street, in mind. The trio will experiment with the unique acoustics of this intimate urban alley turned patio/beer garden, with an exploratory, electronic, beat-driven, and dub-inspired set for a relaxed, outdoor summer evening. This performance is an extension of PearlArts’ SYNCHRONIZED: with Soy Sos series.

Bri Dominique is a multi instrumental songstress originally from Westchester, New York. She currently lives in the Pittsburgh area, where she studies music therapy and composes as well, mainly in orchestral form. Through experimental song writing and raw exploration of ideas, Dominique continues to evolve into different interests constantly. While exploring electronic, baroque pop, alternative, and soul genres, she stays true to her roots in classical performance, mainly on viola.

Ras Maisha is a rastafari reggae musician, fine artist, graphic designer, and farmer born in Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica.

Herman Pearl/Soy Sos is a sound designer, audio engineer, and producer. He sees sound as an actual physical force, literally moving the air around and through us. Using synchronization-based ensembles, Soy Sos collaborates with contemporary sound artists to create live, improvised sound-scapes as STAYCEE PEARL dance project & Soy Sos dancers move throughout the space. Come for the vibes, sound discussions, and dance.

slowdanger is a Pittsburgh based, multidisciplinary performance entity founded in 2013 by co-artistic directors taylor knight and anna thompson. They use electronic instrumentation, vocalization and choreographic, improvisational and contemporary dance/performance frameworks to create work at the intersection of movement, sound and technology. Their performance work largely centers the body and researches its relationship to other bodies, the environment, sensory information, technology and the unknown/unknowable. The name, slowdanger, was inspired by the road signs that signify a demolition of old surfaces to build upon the remnants. They continue to return to this overarching concept cyclically in performance creation; rebuilding, slowing down to examine the remains and re-imagine new futures. slowdanger’s performance work has been featured across the United States and Canada in venues ranging from proscenium theaters and galleries to nightclubs and dive bars. From directing music videos to scoring  plays, slowdanger transforms its shape to adapt to a variety of different containers. They use sound as a physical extension of their bodily practices, to further embody and connect with their audience. More info at www.slowdangerslowdanger
